A heritage of craftsmanship since 1816
Port Salut®’s story began in 1816, when Trappist monks at the Abbaye du Port du Salut in Entrammes, nestled in the Loire Valley, crafted this smooth and creamy cheese using a time-honoured recipe.
By 1873, Port Salut® had reached the Parisian market, where its arrival was met with such excitement that a flag was raised to announce: “The cheeses have arrived!”
For nearly two centuries, Port Salut® was produced within the abbey’s original grounds. Although production moved in 2005, the cheese remains in the hands of expert craftsmen who continue to uphold the same tradition of quality and care, ensuring every bite delivers the signature taste that has made Port Salut® a cherished classic.
A Port Salut® for every occasion
With its mild, creamy taste and signature orange rind, Port Salut® has been a favourite among cheese lovers for over 200 years. This smooth, melt-in-the-mouth French cheese is a versatile addition to any menu, bringing indulgence and refinement to every occasion.
Perfectly suited for hotel breakfast buffets, cheese boards, and gourmet sandwiches, Port Salut® is available in both a semi-soft wedge and convenient pre-sliced format. The wedge offers a traditional, artisanal touch—ideal for elegant cheese platters and sharing boards—while the slices provide an effortless way to add rich, creamy flavour to sandwiches, paninis, and quick-serve menus.
Loved by all ages and easy to pair with fresh fruit, crusty bread, or a glass of crisp white wine, Port Salut® is a must-have for chefs and operators looking to elevate their offering with a premium French cheese that delivers on both taste and tradition.
